India’s Broadband Boom: Subscriber Base Crosses 100 Crore, Up Sixfold Since 2014

According to the most recent statistics from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), the number of broadband customers in India has surpassed 100 crore. According to the statistics, India’s broadband subscriber base grew by more than six times, from 131.49 million (13.15 crore) at the end of November 2015 to 1 billion (100.37 crore) by the end of November 2025.

India’s Broadband Growth Milestone

In a recent Year-End Review statement, the Department of Telecommunication (DoT) noted that significant advancements were made in the areas of connectivity, digital infrastructure, citizen-centric governance, and technical self-reliance in 2025.

The DoT said that India has entered a new phase of digital transformation thanks in large part to the National Broadband Mission (NBM) 2.0, which was introduced on January 17, 2025.

Data Usage and Speed Surge

The average monthly data usage per cellular user has grown by 399 times, from only 61.66 MB in March 2014 to 24.01 GB in 2025, according to the research. According to the Department of Technology, this is “one of the highest in the world.”

Additionally, the median mobile broadband download speed jumped from 10.71 Mbps in 2019 to an astounding 131.47 Mbps in October 2025, supporting the increasing data consumption.

Fixed Broadband and Fiber Expansion

Similarly, the DoT reports that fixed broadband download speeds have sharply increased from 29.25 Mbps in 2019 to 60.34 Mbps in 2025, citing statistics from Ookla’s Speedtest Global Index.

The Optical Fiber Cable (OFC) network expanded from 19.35 lakh route kilometers in 2019 to 42.36 lakh route kilometers in September 2025, according to the research.

Telephone Connectivity and Digital Inclusion

Additionally, it emphasized how telephone connections increased from 933 million in March 2014 to 1228.94 million in September 2025. In the meanwhile, the so-called “digital gap” narrowed as rural telephone connections increased by 42.9%, from 377.78 million in March 2014 to 539.83 million in September 2025—a growth rate that was almost twice as high as that of metropolitan regions.

The agency continued by pointing out that the average cost of mobile data (per gigabyte) decreased from $0.16 in 2016 to $0.10 in 2025.

National Frequency Allocation Plan 2025

The National Frequency Allocation Plan 2025 for the administration and distribution of radio-frequency spectrum in India was also unveiled by DoT on Tuesday.

It said that the goal of the new strategy is to make the nation’s spectrum management “responsive, high-capacity, and harmonized with global norms.”
