UPI Hits 21.6 Billion Transactions in December 2025 with AI-Powered Growth

In December 2025, the digital payment ecosystem in India performed very well, with Unified Payments Interface (UPI) transactions reaching a record high.

According to statistics from the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), UPI performed an astounding 21.63 billion transactions last month—the biggest monthly number ever.

This is a 29% year-over-year increase from the 20.47 billion transactions in November.

Growth in Money

UPI transaction value creates a new record as well.

In December 2025, the total amount of UPI transactions was an astounding ₹27.97 lakh crore.

This is a 20% increase over November’s ₹26.32 lakh crore.

Additionally, the December total surpasses the October 2025 peak of ₹27.28 lakh crore, demonstrating the ongoing growth and acceptance of digital payments across India.

CEO’s Observations and Daily Transaction Average

With an average daily transaction value of ₹90,217 crore, UPI handled close to 698 million transactions on a typical day.

The average ticket price was around ₹1,293, indicating a slow decrease over the previous few months. In response to this trend, Cashfree Payments CEO and co-founder Akash Sinha said that these figures show a fundamental shift in consumer behavior rather than just seasonal peaks.

Growing Acceptance of UPI and Its Prospects

Sinha went on to say that the expansion in both volume and value demonstrates how robust India’s digital payments system is. According to him, it was “planned with purpose, and constructed to scale from day one.”

Sinha said that UPI is expanding beyond routine low-value transactions due to increased customer trust and broader QR adoption. He anticipates that new payment practices like conversational payments and biometric verification would spur future expansion.
