For Indians who aspire to see the world, there is good news. In the most recent Henley Passport Index rankings for February 2026, India rose five spots from 80th to 75th, demonstrating the robustness of the Indian passport.
In early 2026, India was in the 80th position. This suggests that Indian nationals can now enter more nations more easily than they could in the past.
Based on the number of nations that a person can enter without a visa or with a visa-on-arrival, the Henley Passport Index rates passports from around 200 nations. A higher rating means that more countries are more easily accessible to that nation’s residents.
In recent years, the Indian passport’s standing has gradually improved. India’s rating is still lower than it was ten years ago, though. In 2006, India achieved its highest-ever ranking of 71st. When it comes to the number of nations that allow visa-free or visa-on-arrival travel, India currently comes in at number 75, but it still trails several other nations.
Asian nations continue to occupy prominent places on this list. Among the nations with the strongest passports worldwide are South Korea, Japan, and Singapore. These nations’ citizens have easy access to or no need for a visa to enter more than 185 countries. The US and UK, which used to be at the top, have fallen in the meantime. In terms of visa-free travel, the US is now ranked 10th, trailing 37 other nations.
