Sam Altman Reacts to Viral Onstage Moment with Dario Amodei at India AI Summit

Sam Altman of OpenAI and Dario Amodei, the CEO of competitor AI company Anthropic, have explained what transpired during an uncomfortable onstage moment during a group photo session.

Altman and Amodei were hesitant to participate in the brief but noteworthy incident that took place during the India AI Impact Summit. “I was sort of confused and did not know what I was supposed to do,” Altman told PTI on Thursday, referring to the instance in which the two AI leaders were standing next to each other but chose not to hold hands for the ceremonial photo.

The video swiftly went viral on the internet, stoking rumors that the two software titans might be at odds. But Altman clarified the situation, dismissing any implication of competition as the reason for the split-second choice.

What took place on stage?

Following Tuesday morning’s keynote address at the conference, Prime Minister Narendra Modi summoned a number of international tech CEOs to the stage for a photo. Sundar Pichai, Pratyush Kumar, Sam Altman, Dario Amodei, and Alexandr Wang were among those in attendance.

With Altman on his left and Pichai on his right, the prime minister occupied the center. Beside Altman stood Amodei, who had been at OpenAI before departing to co-found Anthropic.

The Prime Minister and other leaders raised their hands as cameras flashed, and Altman and Amodei seemed briefly uncertain about what to do. The two finished up with their fists in the air while the others held each other’s hands as they raised them.

Altman responded, “I did not know what was happening,” when questioned about the uncomfortable situation. When Prime Minister Modi took my hand and held it up, I was a little perplexed and unsure of our intended activity. I believed it to be the open clock.

Have the two executives ever been in a rivalry before?
Prior to 2019, Altman, 40, and Amodei, three years his senior, collaborated at OpenAI. Later, in 2020, Amodei, his sister Daniela, and a number of other prominent researchers departed the organization. According to reports, the split occurred because of differences of opinion with Altman and the board on the company’s course.

After founding Anthropic, the Amodei siblings positioned it as a competitor in the AI market. Altman and Amodei have frequently disagreed on artificial intelligence since their breakup.

After the OpenAI board abruptly fired Altman on November 17, 2023, it apparently reached out to Amodei. But the Anthropic head turned down the offer, and a few days later, following a contentious internal dispute, Altman was reinstated as the company’s leader.

According to the news agency, the rivalry between the two AI firms has subsequently escalated into a direct business conflict. This year, Anthropic even ran humorous Super Bowl commercials that made fun of OpenAI’s purported intentions to integrate advertising into ChatGPT.
