From February 26 to March 7, 2026, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney will go to India, Australia, and Japan in an effort to expand international trade and draw in fresh foreign investment.
On Monday, February 23, the Canadian prime minister released a statement stating that the visit aims “to unleash new prospects for Canadian workers and businesses across trade, energy, technology, and defense.” The Prime Minister will strengthen regional ties that are vital to our security and economy by visiting three of Canada’s most powerful Indo-Pacific allies.
Carney’s visit coincides with his attempts to expand Canada’s relationships outside of its main trading partner, the United States. After declaring that the old rules-based order is finished and asking middle powers like Canada to forge coalitions to establish a more equitable and robust global system, Harper received a rare standing ovation at the World Economic Forum in Davos last month.
The statement read, “To strengthen Canada in a changing world, we are investing in our strength, diversifying our commerce, and building a thick web of new links throughout the world.”
This is the timetable for Carney’s planned visit
India
Prior to meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi, PM Carney will make a stop in Mumbai. Through new, ambitious partnerships in trade, energy, technology, artificial intelligence (AI), talent, culture, and defense, they will examine how to deepen and broaden Canada-India ties.
In order to investigate investment opportunities in Canada and promote new collaborations between organizations from both nations, he will also interact with business leaders.
Australia
Following that, Mark Carney will go to Sydney and Canberra, Australia, to meet with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to fortify collaboration on trade, essential minerals, defense, maritime security, and cutting-edge technology like artificial intelligence.
This will be the first speech by a Canadian prime minister in almost two decades, and he will address both houses of the Australian Parliament as well as invited dignitaries. In order to encourage bilateral trade and investment with Australia and draw in new investment, Prime Minister Carney will also engage with investors and business leaders.
Japan
Prime Minister Carney will meet with Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae in Tokyo, Japan, to increase cooperation and investment in advanced manufacturing, clean energy, vital minerals, and food security. The topic of discussion will also include strengthening defense and security cooperation, with a focus on promoting an open and free Indo-Pacific.
“Canada is focused on what we can control in a more unpredictable environment,” Mark Carney stated in reference to the impending visit. To open up new chances for our firms and employees, we are expanding our trade and drawing in significant new investment. In order to increase certainty, security, and prosperity at home, we are establishing new alliances overseas.
