Air India Gets US Approval for Passenger, Cargo and Charter Flights

Air India has received an important regulatory approval from the United States that allows the airline to expand its international operations. The authorization strengthens aviation ties between India and the US while supporting passenger travel, cargo transport, and charter services between the two countries.

Air India can now conduct passenger, freight, and charter flights between India and the US thanks to a modified foreign air carrier authorization from the US.

Air India Receives Modified US Air Carrier Authorization

This week, the US Department of Transportation completed its assessment and issued the final order. During the time allotted for public comments, no concerns were submitted.

The Department had previously asked interested parties to submit objections within 21 days if they disagreed with the proposed judgment, according to officials. They did not get any.

US Department of Transportation Finalizes Decision

The order stated, “No objections were submitted within the time limit provided.” Consequently, the Department finalized its previous conclusions and granted Air India the revised permit and the accompanying operating restrictions.

Air India is able to conduct scheduled international passenger, freight, and postal transit involving the United States thanks to the authorization.

Expanded Passenger and Cargo Flight Permissions

The authorization covers flights to locations in the US and beyond from locations behind India, via India, and intermediate places. Additionally, the airline is permitted to run scheduled cargo flights between the US and other foreign locations.

Additionally, the certificate permits charter flights between India and the US that transport people, goods, and mail. If the service is a part of an ongoing operation connected to India, charter activities between the US and third nations are also permitted.

Permit Effective After Presidential Review Period

After the presidential review period concluded without rejection, the modified permit went into effect on March 2, 2026.

According to US law, the President or a designated official may examine international air carrier permits issued by the Department of Transportation. The order goes into effect automatically if there is no protest within the allotted time.

📊 Operational Conditions for Air India Flights

  • Compliance Required: US aviation safety and security laws
  • Regulating Agencies: TSA and Federal Aviation Administration
  • Indian Approval: Must maintain valid authorization from Indian government
  • Application Submitted: October 2025
  • Operational Scope: Passenger, cargo, postal, and charter services
  • Public Interest Decision: Airline deemed financially and operationally capable

Safety Compliance and Aviation Regulations

Air India must abide with US aviation laws and security standards in order to obtain the authorization. The Transportation Security Administration and the Federal Aviation Administration are two agencies that implement these regulations.

The airline must also adhere to international aviation safety regulations and have a current permission from the Indian government for the services it provides. According to previous documents, Air India submitted an application in October 2025 for the modified permit and exemption authority.

Growing Air Travel Between India and the United States

According to the Department, the proposal aimed to include the airline’s existing operational rights under the US-India air transportation agreement.

Officials came to the conclusion that granting the permission was in the public interest because Air India had proven it was operationally and financially capable of carrying out the suggested services.

Airlines from both India and the United States are able to conduct flights between the two markets thanks to the aviation framework that both nations maintain. Due to economic connections, tourism, and a sizable Indian diaspora in the US, air travel between the two nations has increased substantially in recent years.
