French authorities have foiled a potential terrorist attack in central Paris after detaining a suspect attempting to detonate an improvised explosive device near a major financial institution.
According to the Le Parisien newspaper on Saturday, which cited law enforcement sources, authorities in France have detained a man who allegedly attempted to set off an improvised explosive device in front of a Bank of America facility in the center of Paris.

French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez declared on social media on Saturday that the national counterterrorism prosecution department has opened a formal investigation into the situation.

Le Parisien reports that the main suspect was apprehended in the city’s 8th arrondissement, or district, at around 3:25 a.m. local time (0225 GMT) while trying to set off the explosive device.
“We are aware of the incident and are engaging with the police,” a Bank of America representative told Reuters. He was taken into custody, while another individual at the scene fled and is still at large, according to the newspaper.
