Developers can now offer monthly fees linked to a required 12-month commitment thanks to Apple Inc.’s new App Store subscription model. The function, which was unveiled on April 27, 2026, is intended to lower the cost of long-term app subscriptions by dividing the annual total into smaller monthly payments.
This new arrangement requires users to make all 12 payments, even if they discontinue the service early, in contrast to typical monthly subscriptions. Users can cancel their subscription at any time, however doing so only stops it from automatically renewing after the entire commitment term has passed.
This arrangement gives users more flexible payment options while guaranteeing developers receive the entire annual membership value.
Additionally, Apple cautioned that incomplete payments could result in limitations on access to Apple Accounts, such as the inability to download apps or get updates. This demonstrates a more stringent enforcement strategy in contrast to conventional subscription models.
Developers can incorporate the feature into their apps prior to the public release by using App Store Connect and Xcode for testing. With the release of iOS 26.5 in May 2026, a worldwide launch is anticipated.
Although it will be available in other parts of the world, Apple announced that the new subscription model will not be available at launch in Singapore and the United States. iOS 26.4 or later devices are required for the rollout.
This action is part of Apple’s larger plan to strike a balance between customer affordability and developers’ steady income. The company hopes to increase long-term users while lowering upfront expenses by combining monthly payments with discounted annual pricing.
All things considered, the new method may change how users engage with app subscriptions by offering a hybrid model that combines freedom and financial commitment.
