After many SpiceJet aircraft had lengthy delays and abrupt cancellations, leaving hundreds of passengers stranded late Tuesday night, operations at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport descended into chaos.
Key lines to Delhi, Bengaluru, and Ahmedabad were impacted by the interruption, which mostly affected Terminal 1. SG 631 to Delhi, one of the most severely impacted planes, experienced a nearly four-hour delay. After boarding, passengers were requested to disembark when the flight was suddenly canceled without any reason.
The terminal experienced increasing traffic as delays spread to other flights. Videos from the event showed crowded boarding gates, irate travelers confronting airline employees, and tense situations getting worse since there was little communication. Confusion increased as many travelers found it difficult to receive information about rebooking, refunds, or other arrangements.
SpiceJet has had a number of operational difficulties in recent weeks, and this event is only one of them. Passengers have previously complained about similar inconveniences at airports in Ahmedabad and Bengaluru, alleging last-minute cancellations, technical difficulties, and aircraft maintenance issues.
The airline did not immediately provide a comprehensive statement explicitly addressing the Mumbai event, despite the increasing volume of concerns. Although operational limitations or technical issues are usually blamed for such diversions, travelers at the airport voiced displeasure over inadequate help and communication.
Although airport operations have already started to stabilize, the incident has sparked new worries regarding passenger handling and dependability amid delays.
