Antwerp Court Approves Extradition of Fugitive Jeweler Mehul Choksi

Officials said, “The prosecution informed the court that he is still a flight risk and cannot get out of jail.”

According to sources aware of the incident, a court in Antwerp on Friday, October 17, 2025, approved the extradition of fugitive diamantaire Mehul Choksi, stating that his detention by Belgian police at India’s request was lawful.

Choksi has the right to challenge the ruling in a Belgian higher court, they said, adding that the judgment is a powerful endorsement of India’s cause for his extradition.

“We have benefited from the order. According to the court, his detention by Belgian officials at India’s request was lawful. “It is clearly evident what the first legal step is to have him extradited,” a top official said.

Indian officers from the CBI and the foreign affairs ministry helped Belgian prosecutors provide compelling evidence of Choksi’s alleged involvement in a ₹13,000 crore fraud at the Punjab National Bank in conjunction with his nephew Nirav Modi.

According to the authorities, the prosecutors informed the court that he is still a flight risk and cannot be freed from custody.
