Bharat Telecom Stack: India’s First Indigenous 4G Technology by BSNL, TCS & C-DOT

In order to promote independence and digital inclusion, BSNL, TCS, C-DOT, and Tejas introduce Bharat Telecom Stack, India’s first domestic 4G solution.

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) on Friday launched the Bharat Telecom Stack, an end-to-end indigenous telecom solution created in partnership with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), the Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT), and Tejas Networks. This move is being heralded as a turning point for India’s digital future.

According to the official press release, this launch makes India only the fifth nation in the world to have a completely independent telecom technology stack that can support 4G and other networks in the future.

The initiative is strongly related to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s goal of a digitally inclusive country and an Atmanirbhar Bharat.

Delivered in record speed, with built-in mission mode

It was nothing short of a marathon rush to implement this 4G deployment countrywide. TCS spearheaded the endeavor, establishing data centers, implementing C-DOT’s EPC Core Application, deploying base stations and radio infrastructure from Tejas Networks across 100,000 locations, and combining all of this under its AI-powered Cognitive Network Operations (CNOPS) platform for 24-hour monitoring.

It was one of the world’s quickest 4G deployments, with the full system finished in under two years. Additionally, it has been completely incorporated into BSNL’s current 2G/3G infrastructure, which is uncommon for projects of this size.

Why this is important

This goes beyond a simple telecom update. The official news release states that the native stack will:

Reduce reliance on foreign suppliers to bolster India’s national security.

Make sure that both rural and urban regions have reasonably priced access to connection.

Drive vital services including e-governance, telemedicine, online education, and citizen services.

Establish a foundation that is scalable so that it can easily transition to 5G and beyond.

Launch-related voices

A BSNL CMD Robert J. Ravi referred to the implementation as “a historic accomplishment for national pride.” According to him, the stack demonstrates that India can close the digital gap and create a safe, independent digital future.

A totally swadeshi 4G network that is scalable will now provide users with a new level of connection, according to Sandeep Govil, Director (Consumer Mobility), BSNL.

The initiative is “historic and important,” according to N Ganapathy Subramaniam, Chairman of Tejas Networks and Advisor at TCS. He also said that India is now one of the few nations having a complete, standards-compliant telecom technology stack.

The lengthy history of TCS in India’s digital narrative

The initiative is the most recent in TCS’s six-decade history of building the technological foundation of India. TCS has continuously been at the center of nation-building initiatives, from modernizing stock exchanges and creating digital services focused on citizens to carrying out significant transformation projects for the government.

Another pillar in that tradition that solidifies India’s position on the international telecom map is the Bharat Telecom Stack.
