India has now fully implemented the new SIM-binding regulations. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) published these regulations, and businesses had ninety days to abide with them before they ended on February 28.
These days, messaging apps like Signal, Telegram, and WhatsApp have to make sure that user accounts are connected to the same current SIM card in the phone’s primary slot and cell number.
In the past, users could continue using the app via Wi-Fi after removing the SIM card and confirming it using an OTP. But this will no longer be feasible. The program will automatically stop functioning if the registered SIM card is taken out of the phone, changed, or disabled. You must re-verify it and insert the same SIM card in order to utilize it.
Which users of the app will be impacted?
Users of well-known apps like Telegram and WhatsApp will be most affected by this. There will be issues for users of WhatsApp Web or the desktop version because they will now be automatically locked out every six hours. They must scan a QR code from their phone’s active SIM card in order to log in once more.
The Link Device feature will repeatedly check and ask for re-verification if the SIM card cannot be located. According to the authorities, there has been a notable rise in internet and cybercrime in recent years. Once they had the OTP, criminals would check Indian numbers before committing fraud from overseas.
By ensuring that accounts are constantly associated with KYC-compliant SIM cards, these new regulations will improve digital security and make it simpler to track down offenders.
Will OTT platforms be subject to the same regulations?
Only accounts registered in India are subject to these regulations. If you have an Indian SIM card on your phone, you will not have any issues when traveling outside and roaming. However, the messaging app can momentarily cease functioning if you take out the SIM card and put in a local SIM card while traveling.
If this is the case, you will have to confirm it when you return or enter the SIM card. Except for circumstances like roaming, the regulations make no mention of any particular exceptions or exclusions. OTT platforms are subject to these modifications, and noncompliance may result in legal action under cybersecurity and telecom regulations.
These regulations, which mandate that users constantly maintain their SIM card in their phone, will somewhat change users’ everyday routines, particularly for web and multi-device users.
However, their goal is beneficial since it will lessen dishonesty and fraud. From now on, keep a close eye on your SIM’s activities if you use these applications on a daily basis. If you need to change your SIM, make sure to check it in the app first. These modifications are regarded as a significant step in the direction of safer Digital India.
