Fenerbahce fired Mourinho after CL’s departure

After only more than a year in command, Fenerbahce fired Jose Mourinho.

Departed 2 days after Benfica ousted Turkish club.

Fenerbahce claimed in a statement that Mourinho “parted ways” with the team, but they also congratulated the 62-year-old on his efforts and sent their best wishes to him. Later, a club official told the BBC that he had won his job.

Despite leading Fenerbahce to second place in the league in his one season as manager, Mourinho—who has managed 11 teams, including Chelsea, Manchester United, and Tottenham—had a contentious stay.

After a 0-0 stalemate in February, Galatasaray, the champions, accused Mourinho of uttering “racist words” and said they would “initiate criminal actions” against him.

Claiming to be the “antithesis” of a racist, Mourinho refuted the accusations and sued the club, requesting 1,907,000 Turkish Lira (£41,000).

After the encounter against Galatasaray, Mourinho, who often criticized the quality of refereeing in Turkey, was given a four-match suspension, which was eventually reduced to two games.

Following a 1-1 Europa League encounter against United in October that led to his dismissal, Mourinho said that his squad would be “in the basement of the rankings in England” under his leadership. In order to avoid competing in UEFA tournaments, he departed Fenerbahce.

Mourinho left Roma after three years to join Fenerbahce, where he helped the club win its only European title, the Conference League, in 2022.

Won the Champions League with Inter Milan and Porto.

Had two periods at Chelsea, winning three Premier League titles.

His leadership led Manchester United to their first Europa League victory and their most recent European triumph in 2017.
