GRSE Signs $62M Deal
On Saturday, Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) Ltd announced that it has inked a $62.44 million deal with a Hamburg-based business to build four hybrid multipurpose ships.
According to a business statement, the deal also contains a clause for two more hybrid-powered ships. “The deal expands upon the 7,500 DWT (deadweight tonnage) multipurpose vessel project continuing for the German shipping business Carsten Rehder Schiffsmakler und Reederei GmbH & Co. KG at GRSE’s Kolkata yard,” the GRSE said.
Hybrid Ships Meet Standards
In front of senior representatives from both organizations, Thomas Rehder, Managing Director, Carsten Rehder Schiffsmakler und Reederei, and Cdr Shantanu Bose, IN (Retd), Director (Shipbuilding), GRSE, signed the agreement.
With battery-assisted hybrid propulsion, enhanced fuel economy, and adaptable cargo handling equipment, the 120-meter-long and 17-meter-wide ships will meet the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) decarbonization goals.
CORAL 7500 DWT Expansion
The ships are capable of carrying bulk, general, and project cargoes, with a single hold capacity of 7,500 tons. In order to support the renewable energy logistics industry, containers may also be stored on hatch covers. Additionally, a crucial feature will enable them to carry many huge windmill blades on deck.
Beginning with a four-vessel contract in June 2024, the multipurpose vehicle program added further orders in September, December 2024, and March 2025, bringing the total to eight. Steel cutting for the CORAL 7500 DWT MPV series, GRSE’s first significant overseas export order in the commercial vessel market, began on April 17 of this year.
