Cyclone Brings Heavy Rain
Due to a cyclonic circulation that is predicted to deliver moderate to heavy rainfall on Saturday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather advisory for a number of Tamil Nadu districts, including Chennai.
Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, Kanchipuram, Ranipet, Vellore, Tirupattur, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Ariyalur, Cuddalore, Villupuram, Perambalur, Thanjavur, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Pudukottai, Kallakurichi, Salem, and Tiruvannamalai are among the districts under caution for heavy rainfall.
These regions should have moderate to heavy rainfall, with isolated locations perhaps seeing lightning and thunderstorms.
IMD Warns Tamil Nadu
The Meteorological Centre Chennai has listed the following locations in a notice on X: the Tamil Nadu districts of Dharmapuri, Dindigul, Erode, Karur, Krishnagiri, Madurai, Namakkal, Perambalur, Pudukkottai, Salem, Sivaganga, Tiruchirapalli, Tirupathur, Tiruvannamalai, and Vellore.
In several areas of Tamil Nadu, cloud cover and rains are predicted to cause daytime temperatures to decrease by two to three degrees Celsius. Fishermen have been warned to remain onshore due to the possibility of squally winds reaching 40–50 km/h in coastal locations.
Because of the heavy gusts and choppy seas, the IMD has advised fisherman not to go out to sea. It is recommended that residents avoid needless travel during times of severe rains and use care in low-lying regions that are susceptible to waterlogging.
Cyclone Shakti Hits Maharashtra
Traffic congestion and potential floods have prompted authorities to be on high alert.
In the meanwhile, many Maharashtra districts are under cyclone “Shakti” warnings from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), which is a high to moderate cyclone alert for October 3–7.
The alert is applicable to Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg, the announcement said. During October 3–5, the North Maharashtra coast is expected to have wind speeds of 45–55 kmph with gusts up to 65 kmph.
The severity of the storm may cause the wind speed to rise. Up to October 5, there is a high probability of rough waves along the northern Maharashtra coast.
Heavy Rains Threaten Maharashtra
Intense cloud formation and moisture infiltration into the atmosphere could cause flooding in the low-lying areas of North Konkan, according to the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) forecast for heavy to very heavy rains in Maharashtra’s interior, especially in East Vidarbha and parts of Marathwada.
The Maharashtra government has responded to the cyclone ‘Shakti’ warning by issuing preparatory guidelines.
In addition to issuing public warnings, advising against water travel, and maintaining safety during periods of severe rainfall, district administrations should also activate their disaster management systems and make evacuation plans for residents in low-lying and coastal regions.
