According to statistics from mjunction services, India’s coal imports decreased by 0.6% to 20.58 million tonnes in August as a result of a prolonged monsoon and low demand.
In August, India imported 20.58 million tonnes of coal, a little 0.6% decrease from the same month the previous year. In the same time of the previous fiscal year, the nation imported 20.70 MT of coal.
According to statistics gathered by B2B e-commerce solution provider mjunction services, coal imports decreased from 121.18 MT to 118.07 MT during the April–August period of FY26.
Non-coking coal accounted for 11.55 MT of total imports in August, compared to 13.04 MT in the previous year. Compared to 4.53 MT imported in August of previous fiscal year, coking coal imports were 4.82 MT.
Compared to 78.68 MT imported during the same time previous fiscal year, non-coking coal imports during April-August FY26 were 72.17 MT. Imports of coking coal were 27.04 MT, compared to 24.79 MT the previous year.
Important element and prospects
Mjunction services CEO Vinaya Varma had previously said that a protracted monsoon has slowed the demand for coal before to the holiday season, and that the current fiscal year’s demand picture is anticipated to continue to be weak overall.
However, given the robust pipeline of thermal power projects being announced and planned, coal demand is anticipated to continue expanding in the mid- to long-term, although at a slower pace.
