Bangladesh banned IPL broadcasts in January following the release of bowler Mustafizur Rahman by the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).

Rahman was purchased by KKR in December at the IPL 2026 mini-auction worth ₹9.20 crore. But amid political tensions between India and Bangladesh, the three-time winners let him go. “The deal stands terminated with immediate effect,” a JioStar letter that Reuters was able to obtain told Bangladeshi channel TSports. The business subsequently claimed that the arrangement was terminated due to its partner’s “continuous failure and default in adhering to the payment schedules established under the agreement.”

Confusion Over Broadcast Ban

However, Zahir Uddin Swapan, Bangladesh’s Minister of Broadcasting, only recently stated that there are no limitations for IPL broadcasting in the nation. The Bangladeshi government then clarified, stating that the IPL broadcast ban was still in effect.

“We have learned about the news article ‘Govt lifts ban on IPL telecast in Bangladesh’ that appeared in The Daily Star and similar stories in other media outlets regarding the withdrawal of the ban on IPL broadcast in Bangladesh.”

“The suspension of IPL telecasts by the previous government is still in place. In a letter, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting asked the Ministry of Youth and Sports for its thoughts and suggestions on the subject. The statement stated, “The Information Ministry will take future steps based on the opinion of the Ministry of Youth and Sports,” according to Daily Star.
