Jurupa Valley Brush Fire Prompts Evacuations

Officials in Jurupa Valley, California, reported that a rapidly spreading brush fire, which ignited Friday night between Pyrite Street and Granite Hill Drive, has consumed 200 acres and prompted evacuations.

Cal Fire, as reported by News.Az citing international media, stated that the Pyrite Fire started around 5:20 p.m. between Pyrite Street and Granite Hill Drive.

At first, fire authorities assessed the fire’s size at 15 acres and said that it was burning in “light showy fuels”.

As the fire spread, evacuation orders were first issued and then extended.

The map below shows the locations of evacuation zones.

According to San Bernardino County Fire Capt. Shawn Millerick, the fire was approaching Fontana. Fontana police report that Sierra Avenue is closed between Jurupa Avenue and Armstrong Road.

Police said on social media, “At this moment, Fontana residents are not affected, however smoke may still be seen around the area.”

Cal Fire reports that as of 9 p.m., the 200-acre fire remains completely uncontrolled.

In addition to dropping Phos-Chek on fires, crews employed helicopters to create water drops.

The fire’s cause is unclear.
