Lumina Acquires 3.8 Acres in Mumbai for Data Center Expansion with Blackstone Backing

The agreements highlight efforts by key data center participants, such as hyperscalers and data co-location providers, to increase data center capacity, particularly in the Mumbai metropolitan area, which is India’s biggest data center market.

Data center platform Lumina CloudInfra, owned by private equity giant Blackstone, has paid crore for two 3.8-acre land lots in Chandivali, Mumbai, according to registration records obtained by real estate data analytics company CRE Matrix.

Registration of the agreements took place on September 19. According to the registration records, Lumina paid around Rs 28.50 crore in stamp duty for the two transactions with two different landlords.

This will be Lumina’s second location in the Mumbai market. The company is already developing a 180 megawatt (MW) data center on a plot of land in Navi Mumbai. Thirty MW of its capacity is operationally ready. The anticipated capacity of the Chandivali site is 60 MW.

Aside from Lumina, other data center companies have made significant announcements to expand data center capacity in important markets like Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, and Kolkata. These companies include Hiranandani’s Yotta, CapitaLand, Adani Connex, K Raheja Corp-backed Mindspace REIT, Larsen & Toubro-owned Cloudfiniti, RMZ, and Airtel’s Nxtra.

Hyperscalers like Google, Amazon Web Services, and Microsoft have continued to expand their data center capabilities throughout the majority of important markets, in addition to data co-location providers.
