Marco Rubio Says India Pledged to Halt Additional Russian Oil Purchases at Munich Security Conference

The US has obtained a “promise to avoid buying further Russian oil” during trade and tariff talks with India, according to the US Secretary of State on February 14.

Rubio said, “We have gained their commitment in our negotiations with India to cease buying additional Russian oil.”

Interestingly, the head of the Trump administration has not made it clear if this also applies to current agreements and all Russian purchases.

Rubio made the statement as he discussed US sanctions against Russia and the nation’s efforts to ensure peace in Ukraine. It has been “elusive up to this moment” to establish terms that “Ukraine can live with and that Russia will accept,” he continued.

On February 14, in Munich, southern Germany, he was giving a speech at the 62nd Munich Security Conference (MSC). According to an AFP article, a number of chiefs of state, defense ministers, and foreign ministers are anticipated to attend the three-day event, which takes place from February 13–15, 2026.
