Notion Press, a self-publishing firm located in Chennai, hopes to make more than ₹100 crore this fiscal year.
Co-founder and CEO Naveen Valsakumar told businessline that the firm has grown by 40% annually over the last two years, mostly due to an increase in income from its tech-enabled DIY self publishing platform.
Within 30 minutes, customers of the Notion Press platform may design, edit, establish pricing, and publish a book. The books are then supplied to readers within a day after being produced on demand using Notion Press’s own printing facilities in India and third-party aggregators overseas. According to Valsakumar, the books published by Notion Press are presently available in more than 96 countries.
For books printed via the publishing platform, the corporation receives a 70-30 split.
For the writers
He claims that Notion Press’s business strategy is based on the selling of books rather than services, in contrast to other publishers.
Making money from the author is the main focus of the self-publishing industry. We made the early decision that our writers should be compensated and that there must be client success. We sell 250–300 copies of each book on average, with some publications selling up to 50,000 copies,” he said.
Additionally, the organization offers publishing services, where its staff actively helps writers with design, editing, and ghostwriting, among other tasks. “In this approach, we charge a service fee, but the author receives all book sales revenues,” he said.
Currently, Notion Press’s DIY platform generates 82% of its income, with publishing services accounting for the remaining 20%. In all, the firm produces between 1000 and 2000 volumes per month.
Novel AI Products
The start-up is likewise placing a significant wager on using AI to expand its clientele.
Soon, Notion Press will include AI-powered tools integrated into its platform to assist writers with publishing research, organizing their book layout and design, and other tasks.
Additionally, the business intends to extend the tool to additional services including AI-powered marketing, course design, audiobooks, and translation. According to Valsakumar, these goods should be available by the end of the month.
