RBI expands ombudsman scheme to rural cooperative banks

The RBI Ombudsman Scheme now covers rural cooperative banks, expanding the client base for these improved consumer protection services.

The central bank is taking action to improve consumer protection and grievance redressal in the banking industry, particularly by fortifying the internal ombudsman system, RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra said on October 1.

Protection of customers and resolution of grievances

The RBI intends to improve services for handling consumer complaints by fortifying its internal ombudsman system. The RBI Ombudsman Scheme will undergo revisions to provide clients with better protection and to further improve grievance redressal.

The RBI Ombudsman Scheme now covers rural cooperative banks, expanding the reach of these improved consumer protection services to a larger rural clientele.

With the addition of rural cooperative banks, the proposed amendments would provide clients with improved protection and more efficient grievance redressal methods.
