As T20 cricket evolves with explosive batting and record-breaking totals, some players continue to emphasize the importance of technique and consistency over sheer power.
Gujarat Titans batsman B Sai Sudharsan said that traditional cricketing techniques still have a lot of importance in a time when the 300-run mark in cricket’s shortest format is all the rage.
Traditional Technique Still Matters in T20 Cricket
🏏 Key Insight
- Focus: Technique over power
- Approach: Consistency matters
- Trend: Rising 300+ scores
- Strategy: Balanced gameplay
- Goal: Long-term success
- Mindset: Adaptability
When Sunrisers Hyderabad plundered runs for amusement two seasons ago, the talk of 300-plus totals began. Sunrisers Hyderabad actually own the top four IPL totals, with their 287/3 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in 2024 resting happily at the top of the list.
After India scored 250 or more in three of their previous four T20 World Cup 2026 games, including the semifinal and final, the excitement grew.
Rise of High-Scoring Matches
Gujarat Titans want to take a slightly different approach by going long into the game and attempting to be consistent throughout, if power-hitting is the current template. In response to a Livemint question during a limited media meeting on Friday prior to the IPL 2026, Sudharsan said, “I do not think it is solely about power hitting.”
“The Gujarat Titans have a slightly different perspective on it. The left-handed opener, who won the Orange Cap in 2025, continued, “In a more conventional manner, we look at how we can reproduce things, how we can be as consistent as possible, and how we can take the game further and make the team win.”
Gujarat Titans’ Balanced Strategy
Unlike his teammates in the Chennai Super Kings, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Rajasthan Royals, Sudharsan does not get crazy. In actuality, Sudharsan and captain Shubman Gill amassed over 1400 runs at the top of the order and were instrumental in their postseason run.
Sudharsan, who has always supported the conventional format, acknowledges that they need to take a cue from the Indian squad that won the T20 World Cup in 2026. “We need to take note of the World Cup team’s performance and make improvements. We have learned from that, and if the team needs it, we would be happy to do it. We must be adaptable enough to have every weapon in our arsenal,” he continued.

Learning from Experience
Matthew Hayden, a two-time World Cup winner, joined the Gujarat Titans’ coaching staff prior to IPL 2026. Sudharsan stated he is trying to improve his power game and is eager to learn from the Australian.
“We have already had a few discussions about that, where he used to view such elements. We spoke, and hopefully that will help me achieve greater success,” the 24-year-old continued.
