Team USA is looking fantastic at this year’s Winter Olympic Games, despite not having the most medals.
Four of the 16 medals that Team USA has earned so far are gold. In terms of total medals, the U.S. squad is in third place.
Breezy Johnson became just the second American woman to win gold in the women’s downhill skiing competition on Sunday. In addition to being the first gold medal for Team USA at this year’s Winter Games, it was her maiden Olympic medal. “It does not feel real yet,” she said after standing sobbing at the platform to accept her gold.
Following a thrilling figure skating team competition on Sunday, Team USA won their second medal. The gold medal for Ilia Manlin, popularly referred to as the “Quad god,” depended on his performance when he took the ice. Team USA won enough points to overcome Japan thanks to the breakthrough star’s performance.
Elizabeth Lemley, 20, made her Olympic debut in the women’s moguls on Wednesday and took home the gold. Jaelin Kauf, one of her teammates, won silver. Jordan Stolz, a speedskater, set an Olympic record by winning the gold in the men’s 1,000 meters. Stolz established another Olympic record with his second gold on Saturday.
With ten golds, Norway is now the winter sports powerhouse with the most golds. With 20 medals overall, they are also leading the field. Italy, the host country, has won 18 medals in all.
