Vijay Denies TVK Role in Karur Stampede After 6-Hour CBI Interrogation

According to reports on Monday, TVK leader and actor Vijay informed investigators that neither his party nor its employees were to blame for the fatal Karur stampede. According to the sources, Vijay also said that he left the location during the more than six-hour interrogation because he thought his presence may cause mayhem and disturbance.

CBI Interrogation and Vijay’s Stand

Sources claim that Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) officials who were previously questioned have adopted the same stance. The comments will now be examined and compared with those made by police, who have previously said that the actor’s significant delay was a factor in the stampede.

In relation to the September 27, 2025, Karur stampede that resulted in 41 fatalities and over 60 injuries, Vijay appeared before the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Monday. In order to comply with the summons he received earlier this month, he took a chartered jet to Delhi at approximately 10.30 am and soon arrived at the highly fortified CBI headquarters.

Questioning by CBI Anti-Corruption Branch

A team from the CBI’s Anti-Corruption branch, which is looking into the matter, questioned Vijay after he fulfilled the necessary paperwork.

According to reports, Vijay has not been summoned for interrogation on Tuesday. But after the Pongal celebration, the agency is probably going to contact him again for more interrogation. On Monday, Vijay traveled to Delhi with TVK leaders Nirmal Kumar and Aadhav Arjuna.

Security Arrangements and Supporter Presence

Several Delhi Police and Central Armed Police Force personnel were stationed outside the CBI office in anticipation of a huge gathering of Vijay’s supporters in order to avert any unfortunate incidents. However, a few fans were able to congregate close to the location.

As part of the inquiry, the central investigative agency has already questioned a number of TVK office bearers and called former Tamil Nadu ADG (law and order) S Davidson Devasirvatham.

Supreme Court Oversight and Monitoring Committee

After the Supreme Court of India issued an order raising concerns about political implications and public remarks made by top police officials, the CBI took up the investigation from a Special Investigation Team. A three-person monitoring committee led by retired judge Ajay Rastogi was also established by the Supreme Court to oversee the investigation, emphasizing the need of a fair and impartial inquiry.

On September 27, 2025, Vijay spoke at a Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) campaign rally at Karur, Tamil Nadu, which resulted in a stampede that killed at least 41 people, including women and children, and wounded about 60. The actor-turned-politician had to halt his address in the middle of his speech as the crowded audience got out of hand and many individuals fainted from the congestion.

Around 7:30 p.m., witnesses reported hearing ambulance sirens, and women and children started to lose consciousness. Officials eventually estimated that about 50,000 people had arrived at the location, which had an area of roughly 1.20 lakh square feet, despite the police clearance letter mentioning an anticipated attendance of 10,000.

Charges Filed Against TVK Leaders

Following that, police filed charges against TVK district secretary Mathiazhagan, party general secretary Bussy Anand, and joint general secretary CT Nirmal Kumar under sections of the Tamil Nadu Public Property Damage Act as well as provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including culpable homicide not amounting to murder, attempt to commit culpable homicide, rash acts endangering life, and disobedience of lawful orders.

Vijay’s Statement and Compensation Announcement

Vijay claimed he was “very burdened down with sadness” in his first remark after the disaster and said that the relatives of the deceased would get Rs 20 lakh apiece, while the wounded would receive Rs 2 lakh. He described the loss as “irreparable,” stating that no amount of money could make the suffering go away. However, he promised that TVK would support the impacted families and provide all help necessary.
