Oil Hits $115: Could Prices Skyrocket to $150 Soon?

The price of crude oil has skyrocketed, hitting its highest point since mid-2022 at almost $115 per barrel. Growing geopolitical tensions, especially the ongoing confrontation between the United States and Iran, as well as supply interruptions related to the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route that handles roughly 20% of the world’s oil and LNG traffic, have been the driving forces behind the surge.

US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) surged above $103, while international benchmark Brent crude increased more than 3% to around $115. With oil prices rising by almost 50% since the conflict escalated earlier this year, this upward momentum continues a robust climb. As diplomatic talks between the United States and Iran show little success, the market is responding to increasing uncertainty.

The anticipation of a protracted embargo campaign by the US to limit Iran’s oil exports is one of the main causes of the spike. In retaliation, Iran has strengthened its control over the Strait of Hormuz, further upsetting international supply routes. Long-term energy shortages have become a major issue as a result of these events.

The United Arab Emirates just announced its withdrawal from OPEC, adding to the volatility. However, economists think the immediate impact on supplies may be minimal because of current shipping route restrictions.

Market analysts caution that if tensions worsen, oil prices may increase considerably more. According to some estimates, prices might stay steady in the medium term between $85 and $110, but if the violence worsens or supply interruptions deepen, they might rise toward $150 per barrel. Price pressure would probably increase if important oil transit routes were closed or unstable.

Global energy prices are unpredictable and investors are on edge due to a combination of supply limits, geopolitical risk, and uncertainty about future discussions driving the oil market.
