Rahane says strike rate overrated after KKR great escape win

Thanks to an undefeated partnership between Rinku Singh and Anukul Roy, the Kolkata Knight Riders finally won their first IPL 2026 match with an exciting chase against Rajasthan Royals. After losing half of their team early in the 156-run chase, KKR was in serious trouble. However, the two put together a vital 76-run partnership to lead the team home with three balls remaining.

Following the game, captain Ajinkya Rahane boldly declared that strike rate was “over-rated” and emphasized the need of game awareness. He emphasized that it is more beneficial to rotate strike through singles and doubles on challenging pitches rather than pursuing huge hits mindlessly. Rahane noted that KKR’s comeback success was largely due to their ability to comprehend match situations and play the game deep.

KKR’s batting difficulties were once again apparent, particularly when they lost early wickets in the powerplay. The team was under pressure when players like Rovman Powell and Cameron Green fell while making ambitious attempts. Rinku and Anukul, on the other hand, displayed poise by concentrating on building the innings gradually before picking up the pace when it was appropriate.

The pair changed tactics in the middle overs, striking vital boundaries and sixes to lower the needed run rate, which was the turning point. In the end, their methodical approach proved to be decisive in contrast to their earlier careless batting. Rahane called the victory a “wonderful escape” and acknowledged that the club needs to get better soon, particularly in managing the powerplay period.

KKR still has work to do this season, even with the win. Rahane placed a strong emphasis on growing as a batting unit and learning from mistakes. The team will now have a brief vacation before taking on the Lucknow Super Giants, another crucial test.
