US vs China AI War: DeepSeek Accused of Cloning Tech

Following the release of DeepSeek’s V4 model, the United States has expressed grave concerns about purported intellectual property abuse by Chinese AI companies.

US officials reportedly sent out a diplomatic letter advising international partners to exercise caution when it comes to AI systems created through “unauthorized distillation,” according to a Reuters story.

The process of distillation involves training a smaller AI model to imitate the actions and results of a larger, more sophisticated system. US officials assert that certain Chinese companies are employing this technique to mimic proprietary Western AI technologies without the necessary authorization, despite the fact that it greatly lowers development costs and expedites implementation.

According to reports, the diplomatic correspondence draws attention to worries that these models might seem competitive on benchmarks but fall short of the original systems’ full capabilities. Growing tensions in the global AI competition have also been indicated by the US government’s formal message to Beijing to address these issues immediately.

In addition to DeepSeek, same tactics have also been linked to other Chinese companies, such as Moonshot AI and MiniMax. Global technology standards, intellectual property rights, and innovation may be at risk from the widespread adoption of such methods, according to the United States.

Chinese authorities have vehemently denied these accusations in response. The US is allegedly trying to impede China’s technical advancement, according to the Chinese Embassy in Washington, which called the allegations “groundless.” DeepSeek has previously said that instead of utilizing outputs from proprietary systems, its models rely on publicly accessible data gathered through web crawling.

This finding occurs at a time when major competitors are rushing to create more potent and affordable models in the fast escalating global rivalry for artificial intelligence. Additionally, the scenario has diplomatic ramifications, particularly in light of the impending high-level negotiations between Xi Jinping and Donald Trump.
